All it takes to send the fax via an online fax service is an email address an a subscription to one of the many Internet fax providers. For this example we're going to use MyFax, but the process works more or less the same with other providers.

After subscribing for a service and receiving your online fax number you're all set.

1.) Open your email software or login to your email account (most fax to email services allow some free account like hotmail or Gmail). You're going to compose a new message as your normally would, expect the TO: address is going to be the fax number you want to send the fax to, follow by @myfax.com. Example: 18883339999@MYFAX.COM

2.) Enter a subject for the message, this will become the header for the fax message, and type the body of the email keeping in mind that it will become the fax cover letter.

3.) Attach any file you want to be faxed such as Excel spread sheets, adobe acrobat PDF files, or even word documents. These will be converted and faxed to the recipient. MyFax, and other online fax services support multiple file formats.

4.) Click send and you're done. You'll receive a confirmation after the fax has been sent to the email it was sent from (MyFax offers the confirmations service but not all providers do)

Receiving a Fax by Email

Receiving a fax through your email takes even less effort then sending one. When you subscribe to a service like MyFax you'll be given either a local area phone number to receive faxes on or a toll-free number (depends on what city and state/province you live in). This is the number you'll provide clients, customers, friends etc. to send faxes to you.

1.)Someone sends a fax to your online Internet fax number. Your service provider receives the fax electronically and they send the fax to the specified email address(es) of your choice. Most services allow you to receive fax notifications to more then one email
